Over the years Internet marketing has evolved quite a bit. The search engines have become more clever over the years making less allowances for black hat techniques and customer manipulation. Meta tags for example used to be a way of stuffing in hundreds of keywords that may not have been relevant to the site they were posted to. Read on for a quick session of
search engine marketing training.
Meta tags used to be a simple way of using hundreds of keywords quickly and easily. A lot of people were using tags that were in no way relevant to the page that they were displaying just to draw readers in.
These kinds of black hat techniques will only fly for so long in the world of internet marketing.
Google in particular is constantly updating their algorithms to protect their visitors from spam any way they can. In order to bring people the most relevant results they are constantly on the look out for misleading or deceptive marketing practices.
Even the slightest bit of search engine marketing training reveals that your title and description tag are the only tags you should be concerned with. A relevant title that has content that expands on the titles concept will always be an SEO friendly strategy.
Your title is the first thing that both Google and your readers come across to identify what your site is about. Make sure that it is catchy and includes your keyword phrase. Getting your readers on your page is your very first and most important job.
As far as your description, you must again include your key phrase for relevance. Make an appealing summary of your content and move on.
Do not ever use your opening paragraph as your summary for 2 reasons:
1)
Your summary is to give a brief glimpse of the entire page while your title is designed to catch the reader's attention so that they keep reading through to the end.
2)
Nobody likes to read the same paragraph twice and this could make visitors quickly click away.
However, you should be aware that your summary is not always used. If the search engine feels that a different block of text from your webpage or article is more relevant to your title that will be what it displays. This block of text will not always include your key phrase, so make sure that your description is highly relevant to your subject.
Search engine marketing training is not as complicated as it may sound. This is simply a way for the search engines to rank information in order to deliver the most relevant results to web surfers.
Out dated methods such as keyword stuffing with meta tags is a technique of the past. Do not waste too much time on any tags other than your title and description for good SEO.
