Black hat search engine optimization is a method of tricks and loopholes to "manipulate" the search spiders into ranking your site high in the search results. The problem is that you can‘t trick search engines for very long, if at all. Black hat SEO can temporarily gain you some traffic for a little while, but as soon as the search engines catch on to you your page will drop in the search results and you might end up getting your account suspended or banned. Take a look at the pros and cons of black hat search engine optimization.

Pros of Black Hat Search Engine Optimization:
• It typically takes a few days before the search spiders catch on to what you are doing
• These techniques will will generally give you quite a bit of extra traffic for a short period of time
• You can gain back links with out the legwork, usually for paying a fee
• It allows you to complete campaigns more quickly as it provides shortcuts for SEO purposes.

Cons of Black Hat Search Engine Optimization:

• Search engines may not notice what you are doing for a short while, but not long
• When they do spot deceptive practices you will get penalyzed (you may not get specifically punished, but you will lose your high rankings)
• Depending on how "unethical" the method you used was you could have your account suspended or banned for good
• A majority of the black hat techniques like keyword stuffing will not look impressive to customers, even if the search engines don‘t realize it right away
• Your content can suffer as all the emphasis is on appealing to the search spiders.

Do you remember when your parents told you "if something sounds too good to be true it probably is"? Well, mom and dad were right once again!

Black hat search engine optimization is a short sighted strategy that is not very well thought out. The idea of these techniques is to manipulate the search engines and take shortcuts to success.

First you need to understand that you will not trick the search engines. They may not ban your site immediately, but they will catch on. Google in particular really taken a stand against deceptive content that does not deliver as promised, so be sure that you do not put yourself in a position for Google to make an example out of you.

As far as taking shortcuts is concerned it just does not work. Big search engines like Yahoo and Google are always updating their algorithms to reward good content with higher rankings and to penalize people that throw together a site with highly optimized useless content.

As a general rule put an emphasis on generating quality content that helps your visitors with their problems or concerns. All the black hat techniques in the world will not get you the #1 ranking in the search results if your content is weak and uninformative.

Black hat search engine optimization swears that you can get to the top of the search results without going through the necessary work. This sure sounds like a great method that will shave off hours of work, but it just does not work out in reality. Anything that is truly worth having is worth working for so don’t be fooled by false promises of a quick payoff.
